Thin Places

Updated: Jan 26, 2020

The Celts have a saying that there are three feet between Heaven and Earth. However, they also speak of a place where it seems the distance is even shorter. These places they call “thin places”. They are the places where we encounter the Divine. Places where what some call “ultimate reality” is made known to us and we become more present and aware of what is true. These places do not have to be static, they can come and go. They don’t have to be places of solace or comfort, some times these encounters can cut us to our core.

Where are some of the places this has happened to you? Do you find yourself returning to these places? Maybe it’s a place in nature, or maybe it’s in your kitchen or your car. Maybe you’ve felt a place become thin as you play with your kids or share a meal with your closest friends. Perhaps someone spoke a truth to you so profound and life changing that you could do nothing but sit there while it felt like time moved slowly around you...

There is a story in the Bible where God has told Moses to take off his sandals because he is on holy ground. We don’t really think of places are being sacred or holy so much anymore. In our busy lives we can be moving so fast we miss it. We can walk right over holy ground, a sacred space, a thin place, a place where the Divine would be revealed to us. My encouragement to you is to take some time to be aware of your surroundings. Be present in everything and always remember that you bear the divine image. You are made in the image of God. You are human and you are Divine. Part of you is where Heaven and Earth meet. So don’t just find the thin places where you encounter the Divine. BE the thin places.
